In the next two weeks, three remarkable Oklahomans
will visit Full Circle:
Mr. Ambassador: Warrior for Peace
Book Signing and Reception with
Ambassador Edward Perkins
Thursday, April 20 at 6:30 p.m.
This Thursday, Ambassador Edward Perkins, author with Connie Cronley of the memoir Mr. Ambassador: Warrior for Peace, will be our guest at a reception and booksigning. I began to read this book out of a sense of obligation--the ambassador has been to the store before, and his life, even in the capsule of the book jacket, seemed extraordinary--but I quickly found myself totally engaged and even quoting it to others.
Ed Perkins has made a difference--most particularly when he was the first black ambassador to South Africa and later as Ambassador to Australia and the United Nations and as administrative head of the Foreign Service. His rise to this imminence and the opportunity to so remarkably serve his country was accomplished despite his very modest beginnings in rural northern Louisiana, the need to continually confront institutional and personal racism, and a late coming to higher education (he holds a Ph.D.). He has done this because he has a facile and curious mind, the ability to inspire people, and a seemingly indomitable will.
He has lived the American dream, but only because of his singular character. Come and meet him. As you would expect, he is also quite charming.
The Piano Man
Book Signing with author Marcia Preston
Saturday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m.
Marcia Preston has become almost an annual visitor to Full circle with her latest novel. I think I have read them all and this is the best. This is the story of a mother who after three years of mourning the premature death of her teenage son has not yet found a way to go on with her life. The son’s heart had been donated to an unknown beneficiary and as a mother who had given up a child to adoption seeks to find the recipient. She discovers someone who is wasting his life and her son’s heart. In the resulting effort to save his life against his will, she discovers the will to live her own. The novel is well constructed, the characters are fully drawn and the pace will keep you happily engaged.
The Dead Days of Summer: A Death on Demand Mystery
Book Signing with author Carolyn Hart
Saturday, April 29 at 3:00 p.m.
Carolyn Hart will sign The Dead Days of Summer her newest Death on Demand mystery (the 17th in the series) in which bookseller Max Darling is framed for murder. By almost any measure, Carolyn, who is certainly OKC’s bestselling author, is best of our lot.
